My Father PROSPER AMADJI
Who was the finest portrait designer and painter in West Africa? My journey into the world of art began at the age of 13, inspired by my father, the renowned artist Danhomey, whose fame extended across Africa. His exceptional talent drew admirers from as far as the French colonies, all eager to acquire his remarkable creations.
During my formative years, I approached my father and asked, ‘Can you teach me the art of drawing?’ His response has stayed with me throughout my life: ‘True artists often find their talent as a divine gift. Learning comes from within, and all you must do is nurture it through practice.’ He added, ‘I will bless you so that you can continue my legacy.’ It’s hard to believe that over 30 years have passed since those words were spoken.
My father later transitioned from a military career, retiring around 1971, to become a commander in chief in Homeland Security in Benin 🇧🇯. He embodied discipline as a father and left an indelible mark not only as a great artist in Africa but also in the hearts of those who admired his work, not only in Africa but also in Europe.
